About This Module

This module provides guidance to planners on how to prepare effective shoreline assessments for updates to local shoreline management and comprehensive plans. The curriculum guides users through the analytical steps local planners must take in updating shoreline master programs, including using existing information to prepare a baseline shoreline classification and characterization of ecological conditions and shoreline uses, analyzing cumulative impacts, and developing restoration plans.

  • Describes the use and limitations of currently available and relevant geospatial data and assessment methods.
  • Provides hyperlinks to necessary data and technical reports.
  • Explains how to interpret and use existing information effectively.
  • Offers illustrated case examples of shoreline assessments..

By introducing various data types and their uses, limitations, and applications to shoreline and aquatic lands management, this module serves to provide an understanding of these data and tools for watershed and shoreline planning beyond RGIS-Pacific Northwest’s immediate outreach.

Module Audience

This module is for local government planners and consultants who are currently updating shoreline master programs.
