Keeping communities Safe from Wildfire

Author(s): Chris McColl & Anthony Gabriel

RGIS Regional Office: Pacific Northwest, Central Washington University

Date of Publication: November 2007

Synopsis:

Wildfires in the Pacific Northwest are costly. Besides the expense of fighting them, forest products revenues are lost, and many residences and businesses located within/adjacent to wildland areas are destroyed. Efforts to produce comprehensive land-use plans in fire-sensitive areas are now underway. The goal: to promote healthy, growing communities while reducing their exposure to potential wildfires. Research at RGIS-PN is demonstrating how readily available land-use and wildfire-behavior models can be integrated, thereby providing valuable information to planners and land managers. Ultimately, this can help direct land-use policies that minimize wildfire hazards in urbanizing areas.
