Date of Publication: November 2007

Synopsis:

Internet-mapping technologies are providing a new voice for citizens who want to be heard when it comes to land-use decision-making. In Kittitas County, Washington, a new Internet-mapping application allows stakeholders to identify landscape amenities that are important to them and their communities. This innovative public-participation tool - called Kittitas Count Open Mapping Project - is another avenue by which citizens can offer their opinions and preferences as their communities plan for future growth. Besides aiding community decision-making in Kittitas County, this pilot application is serving as a test model for wider use. Based on feedback from citizen users, this application holds strong potential for boosting public participation in landuse planning in communities nationwide.
