About RGIS-Tribal Technical Center

The RGIS-TTC site is located at the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute, in Albuquerque, NM. The mission of RGIS-Tribal Technical Center (RGIS-TTC) is to provide technology transfer through the use of short courses, distance education, community based demonstration projects, and the Internet in conjunction with the development of relevant geospatial applications, focused on Tribal issues. Due to the remote nature of many reservations on American Indian and Alaskan Native lands, information and training on new and emerging technologies is not readily available. Many of the problems currently experienced on tribal lands can be addressed by geospatial technology, but due to the inability to receive timely information and training, these new technologies have not been a relevant or viable option for many American Indian and Alaskan Natives.

SIPI Projects & Activities

The RGIS-TTC offers new opportunities to assist tribal officials, planners, and staff to prepare and implement geospatial technologies by offering short course, one-week in length, ranging from introductory skill-level to very specialized topical classes. The courses are also taught during the regular trimester to prepare students to return to their tribal lands and become the geospatial professionals that are needed in Indian country. Courses offered:

  • Fundamentals of GPS
  • Introduction to GIS/GPS
  • Advanced and Applied GIS
  • Hydrologic Applications of GIS Photogrammetry
  • Remote Sensing GIS for Economic Development
  • Hydrologic Applications of GIS
  • Photogrammetry
  • Remote Sensing
  • GIS for Economic Development

The TTC provides technical support to the local tribes.

Recently the TTC assisted the Pueblo of Laguna with the implementation of their GIS/E-911 system. We offer technical assistance with software, the acquisition of system components, and general advice on a variety of geospatial questions.
